1.   Unit Plan: Exploration of the New World
This unit is designed in conjunction with Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Each of the four lessons utilizes one or more of the categories of intelligences to instruct an indicator from the South Carolina Social Studies Standard 4-1. The lesson plans adhere to ADEPT guidelines and uphold USC-Aiken standards of quality and content. Each section below is actually one of the objectives from each lesson. The unit is WELL DEVELOPED.

2.   Early American Explorers
During this project-based lesson, students will become detectives looking for information about early American explorers. Students will have the opportunity to navigate the Internet to locate important facts about these explorers. Students will get then present their findings in the form of a slideshow presentation, timeline, and bookmark.

3.   Creating a Website on Explorers
After researching famous European explorers and choosing the most important ones, students create a web page highlighting European explorers and the discoveries and impact these explorers had on the world. The web page will contain a survey which will allow visitors to select their "Explorer Idol" after reading about each explorer.

4.   Historical Research on Explorers of Canada
This lesson introduces the use of the online Atlas of Canada to assist students in completing historical research on an early explorer of Canada.

5.   Alien Landing: What Are Some Difficulties In Exploring New Lands?
Use this combined social studies and language art lesson to get students thinking about the challenges Columbus experienced when he discovered the New World.

6.   Learning About Major Explorers of the New World
Illustrates a lesson about the great explorers of the new world and the culture clashes that existed between European and Native American culture in the New World.

7.   Exploring the "Goo-ey" Properties of Matter
Allows students to form the connection between the discovery of the New World and scientific exploration and discovery. Students investigate the properties of an unidentified substance.

8.   Who Where They?
Introduce the week of exploration by reading Follow the Dream, by Peter Sis, aloud to the class. Create a semantic web to draw out prior knowledge and establish background information about the explorers. First write the word explorers on the board. See how far the web can be expanded by the students. Suggested ideas by the students are organized by drawing lines to represent similar content.

9.   Memory Game: Who were they and why did they go?
To facilitate students' understanding of the explorers and their motivations for exploration.

10.   Discovering the New World
After studying the different early European explorers that came to the Americas, students will complete the following explorer project. Students will work in pairs and choose one explorer from the provided list.
