1.   Polar Express Teacher Reads Polar express to a small group.( It can be whole group). For the center, children will use small to medium sized sequins to decorate a train that I have run off on different colored construction paper. Kids will dictate( some will do their own writing) what they would have liked as Santa's first gift. I will write this in the middle of the train they have decorated. We'll put the trains up around the room when we are all finished.

2.   Let's Celebrate Christmas! Spark a class discussion about Christmas by comparing and contrasting it to other cultural holidays such as Ramadan, Diwali, and Hanukkah.

3.   Writing a Christmas card to German immigrants of Omaha. Prior to activity the teacher will contact the German American Society of Omaha and asks some German immigrants to allow sending them a Christmas card. (The teacher does it in order to create an authentic environment in language learning).

4.   Christmas Tree Read a book about a Christmas tree. The book should give the students some ideas on how to decorate their tree.

5.   World Celebrations - Focus on Christmas around the World The students will access a teacher-created Hot List and research the Web sites concerning Christmas celebrations in other parts of the world as part of a larger unit on holiday celebrations. The students will take the information found from the Web sites and create slide shows using Microsoft PowerPoint.

6.   Christmas Around the World Students create a presentation about how Christmas is celebrated in the country of their choice (with no duplicates within the class). Students are prompted to contrast and compare traditions/customs of how Christmas is celebrated around the world.

7.   Christmas Commercialism It seems that no sooner is the pumpkin off your porch, than the Christmas decorations are up at your local shopping mall! The pre-Christmas season offers many opportunities for students to consider how this religious holiday has become a marketing frenzy.

8.   The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree This lesson is meant to provide students with an opportunity to improve listening skills, recall facts, identify important ideas and make a judgment. Reading this story aloud and discussing it can help to foster an understanding of a different time period in American History (World War I). The suggested grade level for this lesson is third or fourth grade. It would be preferable to do this in December.
