In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day began as a purely religious observance of the feast day of St. Patrick, a Roman Catholic Missionary and patron saint of Ireland. Many legends are connected with St. Patrick, one of the most famous being the story of St. Patrick driving all the snakes out of Ireland.

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th, to honor and celebrate the death anniversary of St. Patrick the patron saint of Ireland. He was born about 385 A.D. in Northern Wales. He took the name of Patrick after he became a priest. When he was about 60 years old he brought Christianity to Ireland.

This lesson is to be used on St. Patrick's Day. Students will discuss their prior knowledge of St. Patrick's Day, and then they will listen to a St. Patrick's Day story (anything related to traditions, leprechauns, rainbows, etc). Students will then learn a finger play called, "Do Your Ears Point Up?" Finally, students make their own rainbows using Jell-O powder.

This lesson can be used with a St. Patrick's Day theme or unit. In this lesson, students create a caterpillar out of shamrocks, listen to a story about St. Patrick's Day, and play a game called, "Leprechaun, Leprechaun, Where's your shamrock?"
