Lesson Plan Description

ESL Lesson. Rainforests; second lesson. (First lesson presented vocabulary and concepts of rainforest with PPT, song by JP Taylor, The Rain Forest Song.) Causes and consequences of deforestation.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

  • The students will become familiar with the vocabulary related to deforestation.
  • The students will become familiar with the concepts and problems related to deforestation.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

  • Students review the use of the simple present tense in a summary of a video about rainforests.
  • Students' listening skills are involved in listening to a video in English having reviewed a summary beforehand.
  • Student's reading and listening comprehension skills are utilized by answering questions about the video summary.

Procedures/Activities:

  • Warm-up Activity: Use Less Oil Activity
  • Present vocabulary with Vocabulary handout and power point presentation.
  • Have the students complete vocabulary matching and/or sentence crossword puzzle.
  • Read aloud: Forest Family Forever Summary noting pictures. Depending on level of English, students can read this aloud together or individual students can each read a paragraph.
  • Watch video: Forest Family Forever found at Ran.org.
  • Answer questions on summary page.
  • Power Point presentation on Deforestation causes and consequences.
  • Jeopardy.

Materials/Equipment:

 
  • Use Less Oil Activity Sheet (Know the Alphabet) (Warm-up Exercise)
  • Vocabulary handout (English and Korean)
  • Sentence Crossword Puzzle and/or Vocabulary Matching Worksheet

Assessment Guidelines:

Jeopardy was used as a formative assessment along with www.edhelper.com sentence completion and vocabulary matching worksheets. Also reading comprehension questions were used.
