Lesson Plan Description

Strategies for how countries interact with one another. A great introduction to broader units on war (especially the Cold War, Korean War, and Vietnam War)

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Do Now - Response - Think about a time you had a disagreement with someone. Describe the disagreement and the steps you took to resolve the conflict. (5 minutes)

Intro - Share out of responses, tie in to lesson, objective for the day and agenda, rationale (5 minutes)

INM - definition scavenger hunt- Find and complete the strategy and description portions of the graphic organizers. Then discuss positives and negatives of each as a group. (13 minutes)

  1. Avoid war, Appeasement (ex. WWII Germany)
  2. Economic solutions--trade more (ex. N. Korea) or embargo (ex. China)
  3. Support other militaries (ex. Afghanistan against Soviet Union)
  4. Assassinate the leader (ex. failed attempt w/ Castro in Cuba)
  5. Invade, troops/planes/etc. (exs. Korea, Vietnam, WWII Europe and Japan)
  6. Nuclear bomb (ex. Japan)

  • Guided Practice - Illustrations in graphic organizer (7 minutes)
  • IP - Applications to examples (10 minutes)
  • Closing - name and describe strategies- whip around (5 minutes)

There is a graphic organizer to use during the intro to new material and guided practice. There are also stations included for the gallery walk and a worksheet of examples to practice application.

Assessment Guidelines:

Exit ticket - Students should be able to identify and describe each of the six strategies. You can either create a handout with the prompt or verbally give students the task.
