Lesson Plan Description

To provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to be informed decision makers and to make healthy and safe choices. It is important that students examine the daily contacts they have with others and establish the significance of their relationships. This will help them in the future identify positive relationships that will be constructive/beneficial in their everyday lives.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

1)Demonstrate an understanding of what they value about each of their relationships. 2)Describe the importance of forming and maintaining positive relationships.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

Gr. 3 (C4 Healthy Relationships) – describe skills for building and maintaining positive relationships (e.g., communication skills, interpersonal skills). Gr. 4 (C5 Healthy Relationships) - describe interpersonal skills necessary to build positive relationships (e.g., co-operation, inclusion, communication skills, empathy, respectful behaviour). Gr. 5 (C5 Healthy Relationships) - assess their own interpersonal skills as they apply to building and maintaining positive relationships with family and friends.

Procedures/Activities:

Introduction (anticipatory set): - Writing the word relationship on the board. - A story about someone close to me (my mom). - What does the word relationship mean to you? Body: - Categorize relationships with web on board with whom students have relationships with (BF, other friends, relatives, neighbours, school staff). - REMIND THEM: Some relationships are close while others are more distant. - Why do we need relationships with others? - How many people do you interact with in a day from am to pm? - Asking to share total # of interactions/day. - Help students understand that some relationships help us meet our basic needs (ie: food, clothing, and safety) others help with our emotional well-being (how we feel about ourselves). - FACT: You need to have others who care about you and love you so you can develop and grow. We all Need People – Need Each Other. - Imagine yourself on a desert island: ASK: What things could you do alone? What things would you need other people for? Why is it important to establish and maintain relationships? Record last question answers on board. - Discuss how their relationships support them and help them grow. - Introduce Amelia Bedelia's Family Album and read to class. - Explanation of activity sheet and teacher show example to class. Hand out activity sheet . Visually represent a positive relationship in their life. Closure: - Students to hold up work and sharing with class.

Materials/Equipment:

Chalk board, chalk, old magazines to cut up, blank paper (enough for entire class). All materials will be close at hand to avoid any unwanted interruptions during class time. Story by Peggy Parish, Amelia Bedelia's Family Album”

Assessment Guidelines:

Students will be completing the acitivity sheet in the form of a cologue that represents a relationship in their life that they value. This activity sheet must be completed and put inside their Health and Education duo tang to receive full marks.
