Lesson Plan Description

This is a webquest I have used with 5th/6th grade reading students as an enrichment project after the class read A Family Apart by Joan Lowery Nixon.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Students will apply reading, writing, and performance skills as they learn more about the orphan trains.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

Students may extend the assignment by researching where the orphan trains stopped in Iowa and how it affected the state.

Procedures/Activities:

Students will work independently in activities described in the attached webquest. This will include reading, writing, and researching using specified websites.

Materials/Equipment:

Students will need access to a computer and the series of orphan train books by Joan Lowery Nixon. Optional materials include costume/props for the oral presentation.

Assessment Guidelines:

Assessments may include appropriate rubrics for writing and for oral presentations. Teachers may choose to give extra credit if using this project as enrichment for high ability students.
