Lesson Plan Description
Word Swat - this is a word game we play when I want to reinforce vocabulary we are working on. It works for Spelling words, Dolch words, definitions, anything you can think of. The kids love it, it's fun and they are learning without even realizing!
Primary Learning Objective(s):
Teaching Dolch Words - Whichever Dolch Words you are teaching, this is a great way to review the words. If it is Spelling words you want to review, play this game with the words to reinforce how to spell them. If it is definitions for social studies, science, etc, just put the answers on the card and read the definition. They ned to think of the word you just read the definition for and find it to swat it. This also works for Math too. You can read a math problem and the amswers are on the card. ASwat the correct answer for multiplication, division, addition or subtraction.
Additional Learning Objective(s):
This game can be played with any vocabulary you want to reinforce. Another way I use it is for Word Families, but the options are endless.
Procedures/Activities:
Divide the class into 2 teams. Have the Dolch words up on the wall. Teacher calls out one of the words and the first two players try to be the first one to find it and swat it! The winner gives the point to their team.
Materials/Equipment:
Dolch Words you want to practice printed on bug-shapes
Fly Swatters (the decorative the better)
Assessment Guidelines:
As this is a group game the assessment is done as a whole class. If you want, you can do this with your guided reading groups. The groups for guided reading or any reading groups are much smaller and therefore you will have a more individual assessment in place. This game can also be played with just you and the student. You cannot play against yourself so you can time the paly and they work against the clock.
