This is a great way to help children learn the letters of the alphabet. This will be a popular activity that students will want to play again and again.
1. Pile all of the letters into the middle of the classroom.
2. Line up the students into 2 groups.
3. Call out a letter.
4. The first students in line race to the middle of the room and look for the letter that you have just called.
5. When they find the letter, they return to the group and take their place at the end of the line.
6. Keep calling letters until each letter of the alphabet has been called.
7. The first group to collect all of the letters wins.
Alternate Ideas:
1. You could continue to call out letters and the group with the most letters at the end of the game wins.
2. You could break up students into several groups, making sure to have a set of letters for each group.
Several sets of the letters of the alphabet. I have found that larger letters are easier for younger students to handle.
* I have also used flashcards with the letter of the alphabet, and a corresponding picture, for use with young children who may not be able to recognize all of the letters yet. Often, they can figure out the correct letter by looking at the picture instead of the letter.
