Lesson Plan Description

What happens to our lunch-box rubbish? Talking about recycling.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

SOSE Place and space

Local natural, social and built environments are defined by specific features and can be sustained by certain activities.
  • Resources and environments can be used, conserved and protected by valuing and applying sustainable practices (e.g.       reducing water use; turning off appliances to conserve electricity; picking up litter to protect wildlife) – (QSA, 2008).
Students will:
  • Become aware that rubbish in the bin goes to the dump but could be recycled.
Draw a picture of where they think the rubbish from our school bins goes.

The arts: visual arts - depiction of ideas through visual art.

This topic is really a SOSe topic in Queensland undert he "Place and Space" organiser.

Procedures/Activities:

Orientation : discuss what students think happens to rubbish.

Enhancing: Read book about recycling.  Discuss things we recycle at home.  Ask if students think we could recycle those thigns at school.

Do activity in small groups - label 3 tidy trays as "rubbish", "recycling", "compost" and ask sts to take turns sorting the exampels of rubbish (or pictrues) into the right bins.  Discuss what would happen to each bin when its full.

Synthesising / Reflecting: Students think we could use our knowledge on recycling to reduce rubbish at the school and draw  a picture to show their ideas.

Materials/Equipment:

Text:  "What if? A book about Recycling" by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom

Activity: 3 tidy trays and examples of typical lunch box waste OR pictures of typical lunch box waste (e.g. food wrap, juice boxes etc).

Assessment Guidelines:

Assessment will be both formative and summative (e.g. participation in activity and identifying whether  waste is rubbish or recyclable; drawings entered into the unit assessment portfolio).
