Lesson Plan Description

Students need to know the effects that the Nazi regime on the people of Europe. The Students need to understand the conditions of Germany that led to the Holocaust and be prepare to discuss and defend their position on whether an event such as the Holocaust could ever reoccur.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

 
  • The Student will Recount the historical outline of the Holocaust
  • The student will Analyze and discuss the evidence of the Holocaust preserved in archival documents and in oral traditions
  • The student will Discuss the moral questions and dilemmas inherent in confrontation with and resistance to the Nazi regime
  • The student will List the causes, effect and consequences of the Holocaust.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

  • The student will understand the impact of tolitarianism in the 20th century.
  • The student will identify and explain causes and effect of WWII, including the rise of Nazism/fascism in Germany, and analyze the nature of totalitarian regimes in Nazy Germany.

Procedures/Activities:

Engage:

Show the students pictures of holocaust victims in concentration camps. Ask them to write down their opinions of the pictures and what they believe they mean and why. Give student the opportunity to comment with each other about the pictures.

Explore:

Divide students in groups of two or three; give them the list of Concentration camps and Map. Each group will pick a Camp to explore. Using the internet, each group will take a virtual tour of the camp and describe the outward appearance of the camp and what the living conditions of the prisoners were like. Each group will present to their fellow class mates their findings and compare and contrast the different Camps.

Explain:

Ask the students what reason did the Nazis have to do this? What conditions could had moved a whole country to accept this treatment of others? Explain to the Students the effects of WWI on the German Country (give students the timeline handout), tell the student about the rise of Hitler and the rational of the German leader that led people to believe that the total annihilation of the Jews was necessary. Explain to students about the Nazi propaganda used during the time to turn others against the Jews.

Elaborate:

Students will discuss how the Nazis were able to do the things they did, the class will also discuss whether or not the same could happen in America, how and why. Has anything like the holocaust happened since?

Evaluate:

The student will take home a list of questions that they will research and answer and bring back to be graded
