Lesson Plan Description

Students are divided into groups within the class. Each group is given a book which as been torn either by chapters or pages, about 20 minutes of reading for each group. The groups are assigned to teach one of the following to the class, and everyone takes notes. The groups are character development, settings, plot, main idea, conclusions. These are included in visuals developed by the students, which can include a poster, collage, game, puppets, a play, or shadow box.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Reading comprehension and being able to pull out important aspects of the reading materials, as well as being exposed to a complete book in a short amount of time.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

Working together as a group, learning how to correctly take notes, practise on using outline forms correctly, completing book reports.

Procedures/Activities:

The groups read their portion of the  book together, silently. They underline the parts that they are assigned to. After they read, they discuss their presentation to the class. The class can take notes or do an outline, then later do a  book report.

Materials/Equipment:

Paper back book which has been torn and divided among the groups. A paper and pen or pencil is needed for note taking.

Assessment Guidelines:

A test is given after all groups have presented their assigned task. Grades  can be given for the test, for the group presentation, and their notes they have taken on the other group presentations.
