Lesson Plan Duration - 1 year(s)
Grade Level - Pre-K,K-2,3-5
Teach and Review grade level sight words with students using visual and oral cues (song/chant and chart). Assess student recognition and comprehension of sight words by sentence writing activity. 45min-1hr. the first day of each set and 10min. review each day. Once all words have been introduced and assessed, review periodically throughout the year.
OPEN: Discuss how simple words are the links in a story chain and without those sight words; stories and speech would not make sense. All successful people (no matter their occupation) need effective speaking and/or writing skills.
5-10MIN.: Introduce word chart to students (Chart consists of 20 sight words- 4 per row, 5 rows. I have used a chart with all 20 words and I have used sets of 5 large sentence strips with 4 words each. You choose which 20 words to use for each session). Tell students that they will learn a song (or chant) that will teach them some of the words they need to know to be successful readers and writers. Model the song a few times- sing by yourself once, have the students repeat each successive time. This is a call and response chant and requires attention. Be sure to point to each word as you say it and as the students say it in their response. Have students follow with their eyes as you point to each word. (After the initial introduction session, change the order of the rows (if using sentence strips) of words to ensure the students actually learn the words instead of memorizing the song)
5MIN.: Practice identifying sight words out of order. Choose one child or a specific group (i.e. boys or girls, certain table groups, etc) and have them identify a word as you point to it.
10MIN.: Have individual students stand and make up meaningful sentences using 1, 2, 3, or 4 sight words. (You can make it their choice how many or go in progressive rounds- depending on grade level).
20-25MIN.: Have all students write meaningful sentences using sight words (depending on grade level-- at least 10 sentences). Some students will enjoy the challenge to use as many words as they can and still make sense.
1MIN.: Practice song again (sometimes I reverse roles and have the students call and I respond)
**IF TIME PERMITS: Sight Word Bingo- Students are given a blank "BINGO BOARD" and asked to choose the sight words they want to use to fill their squares. Teacher will pull cards in random order to call. The first player to cover their entire board wins.
*Chart or sentence strips using the following songs (in alternate order for each session):
*Pointer- For pointing to each selected word
*Paper and Pencil- For writing sentences
*Blank BINGO BOARD- Grid of at least 4x4 (depending on grade level)
*Small word cards with sight words- separated by session
Informal assessment by observing how students use sight words for their spoken sentences.
Formal assessment by grading written sentences.
