Lesson Plan Description

Students work in groups to form a campaign for a new head of the cell.  The nucleus of the cell has reached its term limits and is no longer eligible to run for head of the cell. 

Each team of students will produce a campaign for a cell organelle.  The campaign will show the importance of the organelle to the cell and why it should be voted as the head of the cell.

Each team will need to show knowledge of their organell by producing a slogan, t-shirt, poster, and bumper sticker for their organelle.

At the end of the campaign a vote will be taken for the leader of the cell.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

The students will learn the function of the organelles in a cell.  They will also learn cooperation and working on a campaign.  Through the voting process they will also learn the impact of media and advertisment on the public.

The students will also incorperate aspects of civics and language arts into their learning experience.

Procedures/Activities:

Students will research their group's organelle and become familiar  with the function of the organelle and its importance to the cell.  To show their knowledge of the group's organelle each team with produce  a "campaign" slogan for the organelle.  The slogan must tell something about the function of the organelle.  The students will also need to produce a bumper sticker that can tell why the organelle should be head of the cell.  A poster will also be required of the teams.  On the poster the students should be able to demostrate knowledge of their organelle and explain why the organelle is important to the cell and why it should be head of the cell.  The student will also produce a campaign t-shirt.  The t-shirt will again show knowledge of the organelle and importance of the organelle to the cell.  The students should be able to complete the assignment within five class periods.

Materials/Equipment:

Text books, computers, and library access for reasearch.  Poster board, t-shirt, and markers for campaign items.
