Lesson Plan Description

Word Wizard Job Role for literature circles. After reading assigned pages group will choose new words from text to explain and illustrate.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Students will work together in a literature group. The focus for this day will be new and interesting words. As students read they will use post-it notes to post new or interesting words. After the assigned reading, students will complete the Word Wizard job role sheet. they will record the new words, explain them in their own words and then illustrate the words. During their upcoming Book Talk they will share with their group.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

This is part of a lager unit on Literature Circles and Job Roles. Students will become familiar with the roles of Word Wizard, Character Sketcher, Craft Controller, Time Liner and Scene Setter. Only one role with be modeled and practiced each day.

Procedures/Activities:

  • Pass out books.
  • Pass out sheets.
  • Model and show examples of grade level work.
  • Complete one sheet as a whole group. Groups read
  • Each student completes own sheet
  • Share

Materials/Equipment:

  • Class set of books for reading.
  • Word Wizard sheets
  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Post-it notes

Assessment Guidelines:

Observe book Talk-walk around and listen to what the groups are referring to in the book. Are they staying on task and explaining thier words?

Grade Word Wizard sheet-Are the words interesting or new vocabulary for 4th grade? are the pictures appropriate and can the student explain them? Are they done at a 4th grade level?
