Lesson Plan Description

This is a simple fun lesson, which uses basic instructions to encourage students to speak without causing to much embarrassment to the speaker. It works well with large classes and can be modified for all levels

Basic direction intructions, it will encourge use of english in the classroom and create confidence it can also be expanded in future lessons.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

This lesson is just the first of 3 lessons which use direction in a way that is useable, this is the first basic lesson. The second lesson introduces opposite and accross and the third lesson introduces types of buildings and what happens there.

Procedures/Activities:

  • Introduce basic directions Left/Right/Forward/Backward/Step/Steps/Small/Big/Large/Turn/Half Turn/Full turn/Side step/Stop/Go
  • Get students to repeat this as you say, and ask them to show you ie raise left hand for left for some of the vocabulary choose one student to show you. Then put together some of the words such as 2 small steps backwards etc.
  • choose one student and use all the instructions to walk student around the class, this creates other students helping.
  • Allow the student who you have walked around the class to choose next person
  • This is where fun begins take out a scarf to blindfold the next student, the first student then has to use instrucions to walk the second student around the room.
  • They score points 1 point for using word if they put several instructions together you can award extra points. If the student walks into anything deduct 5 points and be ready to shout stop
  • I have used this lesson many times over the last 5 years and have had no accidents or problems.

Materials/Equipment:

  • blackboard and chalk or whiteboard and  washable pen
  • scarf or blindfold
  • a sense of humour

Assessment Guidelines:

This lesson is mainly so that sentences can be put together correctly and also encourages speaking, it also lays the foundation for next lesson in giving directions.

It is a confidence builder.
