Lesson Plan Description

This lesson is good to use at the beginning of the school year. It helps children, especially Kindergartens learn that feeling scared is normal.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

  • Students will learn that feeling scared being at a new school is normal.
  • Introduce the school counselor

Additional Learning Objective(s):

  • Students will understand what it's like to be a new student
  • Students will understand the school counselor's role
  • Students will learn the jobs of others in the school

Procedures/Activities:

Lesson: 

Introduce myself

Explain that I am the school counselor

Can anyone tell me something different about being in Kindergarten versus staying home or going to preschool?

One difference is having a school counselor.

Does anyone know what a school counselor does?

Read: Who The Counselor Is Not  in the book Who Is Your School Counselor.

Discuss story and go over Hand out about other school workers.  Show students pictures.

Now I would like to read you a book about Chester Raccoon and his first day of school.

Process:

How does Chester feel at the beginning of the book?

What did Chester's mom give him to make him feel better?

How did Chester feel at the end of the book?

What do you think the best part of being in school will be?

Have children draw themselves at school.

Hand out sheet and crayons.

Assessment Guidelines:

At the end of the lesson students should be able to expalin differences in their new school, including what a school counselor does.
