Lesson Plan Description

By examining our own heritage and cultural background, we hope to be more accepting of others and understand our differences. We will also be able to share our own unique backgrounds and special traditions from our culture and heritage.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Student will use the internet for researching the origin of their family name and then continue to research traditions and cultures of that place of origin.

 

Additional Learning Objective(s):

Students will be able to share the information they have gathered with other students orally and visually by creating a quilt representing their heritage.

Procedures/Activities:

  1. Students will use internet to research their family name. They will write down the country of origin and meaning of the name.
  2. Student will research the country of origin and take notes on culture and traditions of that country.
  3. Student will create an 8 by 8 square that represents their name and heritage. (Ideas include writing meaning of name, country's flag, and drawing symbols that represent the history or traditions of that culture)
  4. Student will share information they have learned orally to the class and combine their individual squares to creat a common class quilt.
  5. As a large group, the class will create a venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences among the group.
  6. A group discussion will also be held to discuss tolerance and acceptance of those who are different.
  7. Finally students will write a reflection of the week's experiences in their journal.

Materials/Equipment:

  • Internet access
  • 8 x8 Paper or fabric squares
  • Marker, crayons, colored pencils
  • White board or paper for venn diagram
  • Journals

Assessment Guidelines:

  • Student will be graded on completeness and accuraccy of quilt square and oral presentation.
  • Student will also be awarded participation points for discussion times and journal reflection.
