Lesson Plan Description

A dribbling game that challenges student to dribble with one hand while picking up a bean bag with the other hand. This is a fast paced activity where teams race to collect as many bean bags as they can.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

The student will be able to demonstrate controlled dribbling skills.

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills

Standard 2:  Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics

Additional Learning Objective(s):

The student will demonstrate cooperation and teamwork.

Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behaviors

Procedures/Activities:

Group students into teams of 4 in single file lines at one end of the gym.  Various bean bags are scattered all over the gym.  On the start signal, the first person in each line will dribble a ball out to a bean bag and pick it up while keeping the dribble going.  (Depending on age level, you can stress dominant or non-dominant hand or other dribbling challenges).  After picking up a bean bag (pick up only 1 at a time), students will dribble back to their line and hand the ball to the next person in line.  They then go to the end of the line and drop the bean bag into a pile at the end of the line and wait for their next turn.  Students keep taking turns until all bean bags are recovered.  The faster the team goes, the more bean bags they can collect.  When all bean bags are collected, the teams cooperate by counting up their bean bags to see how many they picked up.  I use two types of bean bags, animals and squares.  I assign a point value of 2 for the animal bean bags and 1 point for the squares.  They like this activity so much they want to play again right away, so they can step up to the line and practice their throwing skills to scatter the bean bags back out on the floor.

Materials/Equipment:

1 ball for each group (basketball or playground ball)

As many bean bags as possible

Assessment Guidelines:

Teacher observation of motor skills - the ability to control the dribble while moving, the ability to control the dribble while picking up a bean bag.

Teacher observation of responsible behavior - student cooperation, sportsmanship and respect toward others
