Lesson Plan Description

A quick and easy way to visually show children what happens when you hurt another child.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

To teach children of the power of speech; how what they say to others makes a tremendous difference. Helps build social skills, interpersonal skills, and provides a visual example of feelings and emotions.

Additional Learning Objective(s):

To teach children of the power of speech; how what they say to others makes a tremendous difference. Helps build social skills, interpersonal skills, and provides a visual example of feelings and emotions.

Procedures/Activities:

Let each child color and cut out 2 hearts. Then take one, and hold it up for all to see. Point out to the children the smooth surface. Start saying things like "I don't like you..." (Allow the children to make suggestions of their own). After each hurtful comment, scrunch the paper. Point out to the children the unsmooth, crumpled surface.

Allow the children to suggest nice comments ("Please join the game...") and try to smooth the crumpled heart. Show the children that hurtful comments are ever-lasting, but saying nice things can smooth it out somewhat.

Post on the bulletin board, and keep pointing it out when a reminder in the matter is needed.

Materials/Equipment:

  • Paper (blank or with hearts on it, depending on the age of the children)
  • Markers / crayons
  • Scissors

Assessment Guidelines:

Ask all children to pick a child they haven't yet partnered with that year. Allow the children to try the lesson on their own cut-out hearts (the demonstration is done with the teacher's copy.)

Allow circle time for group discussion follow up.
