Lesson Plan Description

Use this as an ongoing research tool in a careers class. The lesson provides instructions for students to research a career beginning with each letter of the alphabet as a way to explore different careers out there.

Primary Learning Objective(s):

  • Students will Resarch and Aalyze career and educational information
  • Students will explore the bredth of careers that exist in the world

  • Students will locate, process, and convey information using traditional a nd technological tools

Use the following website: http://www.bls.gov/OCO/

Scroll down to where it says:

" Ways to use the Occupational Outlook Handbook site:

  1. To find out about a specific occupation or topic, use the Search box that is on every page-enter your search term in the box.
  2. To find out about many occupations, browse through listings using the Occupations links that are on the left side of each page.
  3. For a listing of all occupations in alphabetical order, select a letter:

Click on the letter or letters of the week...................

Read through and answer the following questions:

  1. Write a summary of the "nature of the work". THIS SHOULD BE AT LEAST 5 SENTENCES or may be a bulleted abbreviated list.
  2. Describe the work environment
  3. What kinds of training does one need? Education?
  4. What does one in this career earn on the average?
  5. List 2 things you think would be advantages in having this kind of career, and list 2 disadvantages. For example, an Air Traffic Controller's job may be exciting because there is always something to do and the pay is high...but it could be tedious or boring and mistakes made could have deadly consequences.
